Accessible ramps are required for wheelchair access but all too often vulnerable pedestrians also must traverse these ramps to make the transition from the pavement up to the sidewalk. This is where most accidents will happen. It is imperative to ensure all accessible ramps meet these requirements. We will always make an attempt to identify those ramps that are out of compliance to be considered in your risk analysis of the property.
The requirements for ensuring proper ramp construction are very specific in terms of rise, slope, and placement. Make sure that your contractor fully understands these requirements before authorizing them to construct a new curb-cut ramp.
The most common ramp will be an inverted one cut into the sidewalk and curbing that has a min 48” wide main ramp slope with two side slopes. Ideally the slope one all sides should be no more than 1:12 (one inch rise for every 12 inch length) with special situations allowed under the code. The total rise of the ramp must not be more than six (6) inches. Any ramp exceeding the 6" rise will require hand rails.
